Whoosh: The Inside Story of Indonesia's First Bullet Train



Whoosh, an onomatopoeic term that emphasizes the train's amazing speed (pronounced "wus!" in Indonesian), is also an acronym for Waktu Hemat, Operasi ideal, Sistem Hebat, which means "time saving, optimal operation, reliable system" in a traditional Indonesian way. With no direct carbon emissions, the bullet train built in China is powered by electricity. It aims to promote public transit use and, ideally, lessen the use of private vehicles and traffic. There has been a strong demand for further modern train services throughout Indonesia since the debut of this new one.

This inaugural Jakarta-Bandung voyage is Whoosh's flagship route. The train departs from Halim railway station in East Jakarta and travels through Karawang and Padalarang stations before arriving at Tegalluar on the outskirts of Bandung City. Each Whoosh train has eight coaches with modern design and ample seating, WiFi, USB charging outlets, luggage racks, bag hangers, a minibar, and accessible restrooms. Passengers can choose between three classes: First, Second, and VIP.

It is a derivative of the CR400AF from China's CRRC Qingdao Sifang manufacturer, capable of attaining a maximum operational speed of 350 kph and reducing travel time between Jakarta and Bandung from three hours to less than an hour over 142.3 kilometers of track. China is the only other country having trains that operate at the same pace. In comparison, Japan's Shinkansen has a maximum operational speed of 320 kph.
