Kawah Ijen - Indonesia's Most Beautiful Volcano

Indonesia, which is located in the Pacific Ring of Fire, is well-known for its volcanic terrain. If you've ever wanted to hike one, there are 146 to pick from. However, there is one that is entirely special and distinct among all of them. Kawah Ijen is an active volcano located in the Banyuwangi residency in the east of Java island, with a crater 200 meters deep.

Climb Indonesia's Volcano Kawah Ijen.

So, what makes it so unique? It has not one, but two unique natural phenomena: the world's largest acidic lake and the electric Kawah Ijen blue fire.

Swimming is not permitted at Kawah Ijen.

The turquoise-green acidic lake at the volcano's crater is one kilometer wide and contains 36 million cubic meters of water. The stunning hue is created by hydrogen chlorine gas discharged into the water, which results in extremely concentrated hydrochloric acid with a pH of about 0.

Are you ready for an adventure?

The greatest time of day to experience this beautiful journey is at night, when you can witness the dawn from the summit of the volcano. The fact that the blue fire is no longer visible as soon as the first sunray touches the sky is the key reason why most guests choose to attend the sunrise tour. Aside from that, the sunrise vista over the turquoise acidic lake will take your breath away. Despite being on Java, the volcano is easily accessible from Bali.

The trek itself takes roughly an hour to reach the top. If you want to witness the blue fire, you must descend for another 30 minutes to the crater. Because the sulfuric gasses are highly concentrated in the air, it is vital to wear a protective mask for this phase. Although Kawah Ijen is an active volcano, it is still a peaceful volcano, therefore there is no need to be concerned about an eruption. Finally, the hike itself is pretty straightforward, so you don't need any prior climbing experience or a high level of fitness.
